International investments are not something that a lot of Australians tend to think about when they consider their investment options. Perhaps there is a sense of having less control, or a perception of increased volatility. But the reality is that to ignore international investment options as part of your portfolio’s mix is to potentially miss out on some good opportunities.
Take the last 12 months for instance. Investment management company Vanguard has reported 22.29% grown in its International Shares Index Fund over the past year. This compares with their Australian Shares Index Fund’s return of 15.98%. That’s a healthy local return but an outstanding international one.
According to analysis from another fund manager, Platinum, reasons for the solid performance of international investments boil down to generally strong economic growth globally. This includes economies like Japan, traditionally a laggard in recent years. South Korea, too, has seen good performance in the tech sector from companies like Samsung and LG.
There is a lot of optimism about China. Platinum’s commentators believe that Western media and analysts have not widely recognised the positive effects of reform in that nation. State investment in infrastructure is still strong and potentially stronger. The signs are that problems that contributed to a slow down in China are being dealt with. These include excess capacity in industries such as steel and cement manufacturing, and very serious pollution,
Of course it is critical that you seek professional financial advice before you consider making any type of investment in international equity markets. Our advice would always be that international investment forms no more than a part of a balanced portfolio. Even then it depends on your unique circumstances.
As always, our approach is to consider your own specific situation and goals and to guide your investment strategy against these. That said, if you would like to understand more about the possibilities of international investments and whether or not they could be more prominent in your portfolio, please talk to us.
